The
Book of Formation tells us, "He appointed the letter resh and crowned it and
created with it Mercury in the world…He appointed the letter yud and crowned it
and created with it Virgo in the universe and Elul in the year."
The expression "and crowned it" (in Hebrew, kashar lo keter) indicates to us
that the Hebrew letters are the seed and the root of Mercury and the sign that
stems from it, because it is the channel connecting it to the Sefirah of Keter.
According to Kabbalistic tradition, the month of Elul is known as the month of
Teshuvah, the month of repentance. It is the final month of the lunar year, and
this is the reason that when we reach the end of the year, the time comes to
check 'the books', to take into account our lives (like the banks do on December
31), and not only with our internal accounts – how much money is earned or
spent, but also to check our relationships and behaviors between each other.
The month that follows it, Tishrei/Libra, is the beginning of the lunar new
year. On the first of Tishrei all of humanity is judged, regardless of whether
you identify yourself as a Jew, Christian, Muslim or any other religion. All of
humanity is judged by their actions. Our actions are weighed on a cosmic scale
(the month of Libra is symbolized by scales) and the decision is made in the
upper courts as to the quality of life for each human being on earth. This is
the reason that when we enter the month of Elul, the month that concludes the
year, there is still time to change our destiny in the cosmos by transforming
our consciousness and our behavior toward others.
The idea of "repentance" is not simply to ask for forgiveness, "oh, I'm sorry."
Its easy to say you're sorry and then return the next day to your old ways of
hurting people. The kabbalistic idea of repentance has to do with the four
letters of the Tetragrammaton: yud, hei, vav, and hei. They represent four
energetic levels revealed in the universe – Chochma, Binah, Zeir Anpin, and
Malchut.
The Sefirah of Malchut is our physical world, the world of correction, the
imperfect world in which all chaos war, tragedy, illness, accident and moment of
suffering comes from. The Sefirah of Zeir Anpin is the world of perfection.
Our work this month is to cleanse the negativity, hatred, jealousy, lack and
pain that is the world of Malchut, the final Sefirah of the Tetragrammaton, and
when we do the world truly and wholly, we connect the Malchut and return it to
Zeir Anpin, to create a continuous flow of energy between the two.
The three first letters connect automatically to the Tree of Life. Because of
the short circuits we create, we have disconnected from the Tree of Life, and
must use the technology of repentance to return to the Light, to the beginning,
when we were connected to the Tree of Life.
We do not need to be superheroes to remove chaos from the world. We must only
reveal and seek out Light. The internal quality of Virgo is purity, newness and
originality. A 'virginal' thing is something that has not undergone change or
influence, but has remained in its original status and form. Abraham the
Patriarch chose to call this month's sign by the name of Virgo to indicate the
Light that it makes available to the entire universe, therefore eluding to the
internal quality of this sign, and its power to connect to the Light and reveal
it in this world, perfectly.
Virgo is central column of the earth signs. Mercury controls it. Mercury is the
planet that also controls Gemini – an air sign.
Mercury works on Virgo in a practical, useful, systematic way. Virgos are
difficult people, critical, judging everyone and everything, and nothing is good
enough for them because nothing is ever perfect.
Only when we understand the kabbalistic calendar and that Virgo is the final
month of the year, we understand their urgency to complete things, to do
everything right the first time, and why they cannot begin another task until
the first is accomplished.
Virgos are hard-working, like ants, dotting their 'i's and crossing their 't's,
until success is achieved.
The sign of Virgo controls the digestive system. This is also connected to
Mercury, because when food enters the body, it must nourish every cell. When we
encounter spiritual blockages, it is because we experience a lack of desire or
consciousness to accept new ideas and move forward.
Virgos make excellent doctors and nurses, psychologists, caretakers,
accountants, artists, and engineers. So what must the Virgo contribute to the
world? They have a gift for service of every possible nature. To do work
backstage and to feel concern for serving anyone in need of advice, guidance,
wisdom, experience, love and care.
A big part of anyone's spiritual journey of transformation is to get to know
themselves for who they really are, and understand and accept the unique
combination of their personality and traits. Learning what your sign means can
give you an important and valuable insight as to what your biggest challenge is,
so that you can transform it and uncover your biggest gift to the world, which
is, simply put, the other side of the same coin.
