The traditional story of Passover tells of slavery, exile, and eventual freedom
for the Israelites from the land of Egypt. Traditionally, this slavery has been
depicted as brutally hard work under slashing whips, with an abundance of blood,
sweat, and tears.
While this kind of visual interpretation may generate a blockbuster hit for
Hollywood filmmakers, other interpretations may serve us better when seeking
personal growth and spiritual enlightenment.
Kabbalah teaches us that the literal stories from the bible are actually
codes that can reveal wisdom, knowledge and tools that are relevant and can
benefit us even today. Well - especially today.
In this case, the story of the exodus of the Israelites from their slavery in
Egypt signifies that energetic opening that exists during Passover to connect
directly to the energy of God and release ourselves from our slavery to our Ego.
Even as we're living in a society with many rules and conventions; Even as we
feel bound and imprisoned by commitments and obligations - we are free. We are
free to do what we choose, to say what we choose, and to go wherever we like.
The truth is, we have much more freedom than we tend to think or believe, which
means that in most cases we are imprisoned by our minds, we are limited by our
limiting beliefs about ourselves and about the world, and we are slaves to our
fears and our addictions.
That is why we must tell the story of Passover and the Exodus every year:
Because it reminds us that we can be free NOW if we choose to be free.
And just to be clear - that doesn't mean you are invited to stop paying
taxes, or to start acting impulsively and inconsiderately towards other people
just because you feel like it. As a matter of fact, it means exactly the
opposite!
It means that when you feel the urge to be angry, or to say something hurtful
towards somebody, or to be sad or mad at somebody else because of they said or
did to you - that's exactly when you have the opportunity to be a salve of your
Ego or fears or emotions, or you have the opportunity to choose to be a free
person and instead of reacting to the situation, create it to be what you want
it to be.
There is no freedom in reaction.
But to be truly free, you need to understand what real freedom means.
I know a person that defines herself as a free spirit. She lives in the
moment, creating her life anew every second. She has little or no attachment to
things and people and she lets go of emotions seconds after experiencing them.
Sounds like a great life, doesn't it?
She also has has a hard time committing. She is never on time. It is
practically impossible to make plans with her or to maintain a powerful
relationship.
The reason is, she values her freedom so much, she is a slave to her own
sense of freedom. She doesn't have true freedom, only the illusion of freedom -
If you're not free to give up your freedom when you choose to, you're not really
free. |
